Awards Categories & Selection Criteria

State Street Institutional Press Awards, Asia Pacific aims to recognise outstanding performance in institutional financial services reporting across the Asia Pacific region. The Awards were introduced into Asia in 2012, leveraging the success of the State Street Institutional Press Awards held annually in London since 2002.


The awards are open to journalists, including freelancers, from online, newswire, trade and major newspaper and magazine publications that are based or have a bureau in the Asia Pacific.


The Awards comprise ten English-language categories and seven Chinese-language categories. Categories 1-9 will have a winner and two runners-up. Below are the selection criteria:

Journalist of the Year – Pensions Issues

Submissions for this award should include articles covering pensions developments in the Asia Pacific, institutional investment management or the region’s pension policy developments. Journalists will be awarded for demonstrating an all-round understanding of pensions issues in the Asia Pacific via news stories and / or feature length articles. Entries will be judged on style, content, timeliness and accuracy of reporting. Entrants must submit one article published between 1st September 2017 and 31st August 2018.

Journalist of the Year – Investment

Submissions for this award should include articles covering investment issues within institutional fund management, financial markets or economic research. Journalists will be awarded for demonstrating an all-round understanding of investment issues in Asia Pacific via news stories and / or feature length articles. Entries will be judged on style, content, timeliness and accuracy of reporting. Entrants must submit one article published between 1st September 2017 and 31st August 2018

Journalist of the Year – Investor Services

Submissions for this award should include articles covering any services and technology trends relating to custody, cash management, securities lending, settlement and safekeeping services, derivatives servicing and collateral management, treasury services, risk management, fund accounting, fund administration and shareholder recordkeeping. Entries will be judged on style, content, timeliness and accuracy of the reporting. Entrants must submit one article published between 1st September 2017 and 31st August 2018.

Journalist of the Year – FinTech

Submissions for this award should include articles covering the latest developments and issues surrounding the use of new technology and innovation in the delivery of financial services, including but not limited to robo-advice, blockchain, big data, machine learning, artificial intelligence, online lending, P2P lending, crowdfunding, mobile banking, digital wallets, remittances, O2O, mobile point of sale, FinTech ecosystems and FinTech deals. Entries will be judged on style, content, timeliness and accuracy of reporting. Entrants must submit one article published between 1st September 2017 and 31st August 2018.

Journalist of the Year – Alternatives

Submissions for this award should include articles specifically covering the alternative asset class: real estate, hedge funds and/or private equity. Journalists will be awarded for demonstrating an understanding of how Asian institutional investors are using alternatives, and the servicing and regulatory issues surrounding the asset class via news stories and/or feature length articles. Entries will be judged on style, content, timeliness and accuracy of reporting. Entrants must submit one article published between 1st September 2017 and 31st August 2018.

Journalist of the Year – Regulation

Submissions for this award should include articles specifically covering financial regulatory issues or policy developments within institutional investment. Entries will be judged on style, content, timeliness and accuracy of reporting. Entrants must submit one article published between 1st September 2017 and 31st August 2018.

Journalist of the Year – ESG

Submissions for this award should include articles specifically covering the topic of ESG in the financial services industry. This includes trends in ESG integration in investments, pros and cons analyses of ESG investing, and profiles of leaders/innovators in the field. Entrants must submit one article published between 1st September 2017 and 31st August 2018.

Award for Best Newcomer

Submissions for this award should include one article demonstrating depth of understanding of institutional issues in a variety of styles. This is for journalists who have spent less than two years working in the financial journalism industry. Entrants must submit a news story or a feature published between 1st September 2017 and 31st August 2018.

Award for Best Editorial Comment

Submissions for this award should be made by editors/ senior reporters and include one leader/comment piece published between 1st September 2017 and 31st August 2018 that demonstrate original, timely and interesting thought on key institutional issues.

Award for Outstanding Contribution to Institutional Journalism

To be awarded at the discretion of the judging panel.


This year, entries in Chinese will also be accepted in seven categories to demonstrate our commitment to this sector of the media:

Journalist of the Year – Investment 年度新聞工作者獎 – 投資組別

參賽者需提交一篇有關機構投資者的基金管理、金融市場或經濟研究的文章。勝出者需透過其新聞或專題報導,展現出對亞太區投資議題的深入了解。評判將會就作品的風格、內容、時效性和報導的準確性作出評選。文章需於2017年9月1日至2018年8月31日發表。

Journalist of the Year – Alternatives 年度新聞工作者獎 – 另類投資組別

參賽者需提交一篇有關另類級別資產的文章,內容可包括地產、對沖基金或私募股權投資。勝出者需透過其新聞或專題報導,展現出對亞太區機構投資者使用另類產品的情況以及相關服務和監管議題的深入了解。評判將會就作品的風格、內容、時效性和報導的準確性作出評選。文章需於2017年9月1日至2018年8月31日發表。

Journalist of the Year – Regulation 年度新聞工作者獎 – 法規組別

參選者需要提交一篇專門報道與機構投資相關的金融法規議題或政策發展的文章。評判將會就作品的風格、內容、時效性和報導的準確性作出評選。文章需於2017年9月1日至2018年8月31日發表。

Journalist of the Year - FinTech 年度新聞工作者獎 – 金融科技組別

參選者需要提交一篇關於金融服務科技的應用和創新之最新發展和問題的文章,題材包括但不限於機器人理財顧問、區塊鏈、大數據、機器學習、人工智能、網上借貸、P2P借貸、眾籌、流動理財、電子錢包、匯款、O2O、行動銷售時點情報系統、金融科技行業生態和金融科技交易等。文章需於2017年9月1日至2018年8月31日發表。

Journalist of the Year – Pensions Issues 年度新聞工作者獎 – 退休金組別

參選者需要提交一篇關於亞太區養老金發展、機構投資管理或養老金政策發展的文章。獲獎記者需透過其新聞報導或專題文章展示其對亞太區養老金議題的了解。評判將會就作品的風格、內容、時效性和報導的準確性作出評選。文章需於2017年9月1日至2018年8月31日發表。

Journalist of the Year – ESG 年度新聞工作者獎 – 環境、社會、企業管治組別

參選者需要提交一篇關於金融服務業在環境、社會、企業管治(ESG)一議題的文章,題材包括但不限於整合ESG於投資組合的趨勢、ESG投資的利弊分析以及亞太區的ESG領導者。文章需於2017年9月1日至2018年8月31日發表。

Award for Best Newcomer 最佳新晉記者獎

參賽者需提交一篇新聞報導或一篇專題報導,以展現出對機構投資者的各種相關議題具有深入的了解,並能編寫不同風格的報導。本組別只接受從事財經新聞工作少於二年的記者參加。文章需於2017年9月1日至2018年8月31日發表。
